I havent written much over the past months; settling into San Francisco has been a pleasant distraction.
Last week I cried while Obama spoke after his inauguration. I cried when the poet spoke after him. I cried realizing that things are going to be different, that I do not have to listen to George Bush anymore and that I do not have to feel frustrated, guilty and disgusted at being an American. I want to see this country live up to its potential, live up to the words that our founding fathers used to frame this country’s birth.
I believe that we can be an amazingly inspiring country, not hated by the world but respected. Collaborators and not mavericks. Caring and not selfish. World citizens and not just Americans. We are people, we are human - and so is everyone else. Our government must also be human, and must also be human. Addressing human problems.
“If we act as citizens and not as partisans…” Obama says in his weekly video address. I have hope that this man can change the course of this country, and our entire world. I am scared shitless that he might not be able to pull it off. But when I look into his eyes in pictures and video, he appears so calm, measured and in-control. The weight of the world is on his shoulders, yet he just looks like he’s rolling up his sleeves and doing his job.
I don’t really know exactly what to believe, but I am going to choose to believe. We must all be the change we want to see
